Multiple Sclerosis - Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation

The team at Aspire Rehab are experienced in providing a tailored programme for people with Multiple Sclerosis focusing on client’s specific needs, based on their issues and the goals they want to achieve.

Physiotherapist would work jointly with Occupational Therapist to improve activities of daily living and quality of life. We happily liaise with your MS specialist to better understand your condition and to help manage them efficiently.

Rehabilitation programmes can include:

  • Hands-on facilitation and re-education of normal movement patterns
  • Gait and balance training.
  • Exercise programme to work on strengthening, coordination, balance, flexibility.
  • Seating, posture assessment and rehabilitation.
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation – to support in improving movements/strength mobility, sensory feedback.
  • Technologies to support in practising hand function- Neuro Ball, GripAble
  • Assessment and trial of specialist orthotics to assist with Foot Drop, hand tightness.
  • Use of body garments for sensory and proprioceptive feedback.
  • Access to specialist Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy services.
  • Physiotherapy and rehab in your own home or care home or in the local gym/day centre.
  • Treatments are tailored to client’s specific needs, depending on their issues and the goals they want to achieve.
  • Advise on managing fatigue, anxiety and falls prevention.
  • Therapeutic pain management through mobilisation, exercise, Taping, TENs etc.
  • Advise on medication management used for pain and tone abnormality (some of our Physiotherapists have qualification and experience in prescribing).
  • Environment assessment and advice on equipment and adaptations, referral to specialist team.

How Multiple sclerosis can affect person to person depending on the type of MS, severity etc.

Some symptoms of multiple sclerosis include:
  • Muscle weakness
  • Change in muscle tone (reduced tone or increased tone/Spasticity)
  • Muscle spasms
  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Numbness and tingling
  • MS hug
  • Loss of balance and dizziness
  • Bladder and bowel problems
  • Bladder and bowel problems
  • Vision problems
  • Problems with memory and thinking
  • Swallowing and speech difficulty
  • Reduced mobility, due to weakness, impaired sensation and balance, foot drop etc.
  • Difficulties in transfers and daily routines.

MS symptoms can come and go and change over time. They can be mild, or more severe.

Physiotherapy will aim to help manage the effects of muscle spasm and spasticity, improve muscle strength and flexibility, pain management, improve balance and postural stability, advice on management of fatigue and optimise functional ability.
